Taking an hour for you

Our average client at Physique Exercise Salon is a working woman in her 50s-60s. I often try to end class by thanking these clients for taking an hour for themselves. I wanted to take the time to dive deeper into self care and the true benefits of taking an hour a day (or every other day) for yourself.

As Americans we take on too much. As women I think we take on even more. We set expectations high and we will run ourselves ragged. It is a constant balancing act between family, work, chores, etc. We often put others first and leave ourselves last.

In this graph, symptoms of stress are detailed as reported by men and women. Women report more physical symptoms than men in every category.

Taking an hour a day to decompress has amazing health benefits as well as will alleviate these physical symptoms of stress. When you relax your mental body and physical body benefit. When you feel good you will be able to stay healthy and fight sickness. If you get run down you are more susceptible to colds and flus. Taking care of yourself means you can be a better caretaker to others too. Remember on the airplane when they tell you make sure your oxygen mask is on before helping others? It is because you aren’t able to help others if you haven’t helped yourself first!

Exercise is an excellent way to relieve stress and practice self care. Pilates, in particular, focuses on a mind body connection and attention to deep breathing. The attention to detail and focus on each exercise doesn’t allow you to think about your grocery list and chore list. It keeps you present and honed in, letting everything else go.

Many clients report that they sleep better after an evening class or they feel more awake after a morning class. I have never had a client say they wished they hadn’t shown up to exercise that day. So even when you don’t feel like it, exercise might be the perfect way to show yourself some love!
